Well, Kia says the EV4 is not just about looks, and that it gives you a seriously impressive range of 331 miles on a single charge, that could make long trips up the M1 a doddle, and a price tag that might have its rivals like the Tesla Model 3, and Volkswagen ID.3 sweating.

Well have been itching to get behind the wheel to see if the drive is as exciting as the design, and if this is the affordable, stylish electric car we’ve all been waiting for or not?

So, stick with us as we find out if the EV4 is truly the game-changer Kia wants it to be, or if it's a bit of a letdown.

First off, with its design, it is clear that the Kia EV4 makes a dramatic statement from the off, leaving behind the safe and familiar shapes we're used to seeing here, which we actually really like.

For instance, it is clearly following Kia’s new ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, which is designed to blend sharp, almost geometric lines with some very smooth, flowing surfaces.

The result is a car that looks like it’s driven straight from a designer’s sketchbook in our expert opinion.

For instance, here you are getting a confident and futuristic look that makes sure that the EV4 won't be mistaken for anything else in your local supermarket car park, all while it draws attention from passersby, whether you are in the hatchback or the forthcoming fastback saloon form.

Side Profile

From the side, the EV4’s character really comes to life, we thought.

For instance, here you will be able to boast a long wheelbase, pushing the wheels right to the corners to maximise your interior space and create a planted, purposeful stance.

Then, with its crisp, angular lines running the length of the body, it really helps to create a sense of motion for the car overall. This is then complimented further on the 'GT-Line' and 'GT-Line S' models, where you get some nice gloss black trim on the wheel arches and side sills, which then adds a touch of sporting aggression, while the automatic flush door handles provide your with a stylish and uninterrupted surface at the same time as well.

Roofline

The roofline is then perhaps one of the EV4’s most defining features.

For instance, here it has a stylish, fastback-style profile that slopes dramatically towards the rear, which not only contributes to its aerodynamic efficiency but also gives it a unique silhouette that blurs the lines between a traditional hatchback and a coupe, as it does so in our view.

Here we also improved that the design is finished with a distinctive roof spoiler that adds to its sporty and premium feel as well.

Rear

The rear of the EV4 is just as bold as the front, which isn't something you can say about most EVs, let's face it.

For instance, the design is clean and wide, with vertical LED tail lights that echo the 'Star Map' signature from the front, pushing the visual width of the car in the process.

On the saloon, a striking two-piece spoiler further helps to improve its aerodynamic profile and visual flair as well. All, while the hatchback maintains a strong, robust look with a sharply sculpted tailgate and a clean bumper design, helping it to look just as futuristic pulling away as you will do approaching.

Wheel Options

The wheel design is also a key differentiator between the EV4’s trim levels, we thought.

Here, for instance, the entry-level 'Air' model comes equipped with stylish 17-inch alloy wheels that provide you with a good balance of comfort and efficiency as they do so.

Then, when you step up to the sportier 'GT-Line' or the top-spec 'GT-Line S', the EV4 is upgraded further to larger, more intricate 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique 'GT-Line' design, which really fill your arches for a more commanding road presence.

Paint Options

Kia then offers you a very curated palette of colours to choose from for the EV4.

The standard, no additional-cost option is a clean 'Fusion White'.

For those wanting to make more of a statement, several premium metallic and pearlescent finishes are available for an extra cost.

These can then include a very stylish 'Phantom Black', a vibrant 'Magma Red', and a striking 'Blue Flame', for instance.

Exclusive to the 'GT-Line' models is also a sophisticated 'Wolf Grey', which offers you a very unique and modern finish that complements its sporty styling very well in our view.

Interior

Stepping inside the Kia EV4, we felt it was like entering a modern living space.

For instance, here the cabin is clearly refreshingly minimalist and open, thanks to a flat floor and a focus on its horizontal lines.

As a result, it is clear that Kia has made a significant effort to use sustainable materials, including recycled plastics and bio-polyurethane as a leather alternative, giving the interior a clean, eco-conscious, and surprisingly premium feel for its price point.

Overall, it's just a space designed to be calming and intuitive, whether you're stuck in traffic on the A406 or cruising down the motorway its an interior you will want to be in.

Dash

The dashboard is then really a masterclass in clean design in our view.

For instance, it’s low and wide, which is then dominated by a single panoramic screen that houses the driver's instruments and main infotainment display.

As a result, it is clear that Kia has deliberately kept physical buttons to a minimum, with most controls integrated into the screens or accessible via a few neat shortcut buttons on the centre console and steering wheel, which is good to see.

Furthermore, the use of innovative textures, such as handwoven fabric stripes and even fibres from hemp, gives the dash a unique, tactile quality you won’t find in many rivals, we must admit.

Driver Display and Driver Display Cluster

The driver also gets a state-of-the-art digital setup, with a crisp 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that sits directly behind the steering wheel, providing you with all your essential driving information like speed, range, and driver-assist status with brilliant clarity, we have to admit here.

This screen then flows seamlessly into the main infotainment display, creating a single, cohesive unit which we really like.

Then, on the top-spec 'GT-Line S' models, a Head-Up Display (HUD) projects key information directly onto the windscreen, allowing you to keep your eyes firmly on the road ahead.

Infotainment System

At the heart of the EV4's cabin is its impressive infotainment system, which is clear.

For example, the central 12.3-inch touchscreen is bright, responsive, and runs Kia's latest 'ccNC' software, which is both intuitive and feature-rich.

Crucially, though, a separate 5.3-inch screen sits between the two main displays, offering you very dedicated and easy-to-access climate controls.

This is all while its wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard as well across the range, along with Kia's own AI assistant, which allows for natural voice commands to control various vehicle functions when you need it too.

Front Seats

The front seats have also clearly been designed for both comfort and support.

For example, here, even in the entry-level 'Air' trim, you'll find comfortable cloth upholstery.

Then, when you move up to 'GT-Line', you get a two-tone artificial leather with electric driver's seat adjustment.

This is then all while the range-topping 'GT-Line S' goes a step further, adding ventilation to the front seats, which, trust us when we say, is a real bonus on a warm summer's day.

A special "Relaxation" mode is then available on premium models as well, which really allows the seats to recline to a near-flat position, which is perfect for unwinding while you wait for the car to charge, for example.

Rear Seats

Then, thanks to the EV4's long wheelbase and clever packaging, your rear passenger space is also surprisingly generous for a car of its class.

Here, two adults can sit comfortably with plenty of legroom and headroom, without feeling cramped this is while all models feature two USB-C ports for rear passengers to keep their devices charged as well.

Then, on the 'GT-Line S' trim, the two outer rear seats are also heated, adding a welcome touch of luxury for those in the back during colder months, especially.

Comfort Features

The EV4 is then packed with features to make every journey more pleasant as well.

For instance, all models come with a heated steering wheel and heated front seats as standard, and the automatic air conditioning keeps the cabin at a perfect temperature, while customisable ambient lighting on 'GT-Line' models and above allows you to set the mood.

Then, for the ultimate audio experience, the 'GT-Line S' is equipped with a powerful 8-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, which we really liked.

Storage Options

For your storage options, here, practicality is a real strength of the EV4's interior.

For instance, the centre console is a clever, multi-functional space with a sliding table that can be used for work or a quick lunch stop.

Then beneath this, you'll find a large open storage area, which is perfect for bags and other bulky items.

This is then complemented further with some nice deep door bins, a decent-sized glovebox, and cupholders in both the front and rear centre armrests, meaning there’s a dedicated spot for all your daily essentials.

Boot Space

Moving to the boot capacity, the EV4 offers you some excellent luggage capacity.

The hatchback model, for instance, provides you with a very practical 435 litres of boot space, which is more than enough for the weekly shop or a couple of suitcases for a weekend away.

The rear seats also fold in a 60:40 split to accommodate larger, bulkier items as well, and for those needing even more space, the forthcoming fastback saloon version gives you an even larger boot, with a generous capacity of 490 litres.

Safety Features

Kia hasn't held back on the safety front, aiming for a top five-star Euro NCAP rating.

For instance, the EV4 is built on a strong platform with a reinforced body shell and is fitted with a comprehensive airbag system – including front, side, curtain, and rear airbags – to protect you and your occupants in the event of an impact.

However, the main story is the sheer amount of clever technology included as standard, even on the entry-level 'Air' model.

As this is a car designed to actively help you avoid trouble on British roads.

Cutting-Edge Tech for a Connected Drive

The Kia EV4 also comes packed with the latest technology, which has clearly been designed to make driving easier, more convenient, and more entertaining.

For instance, at the heart of its futuristic cabin is a stunning panoramic display that seamlessly integrates three screens into one unit, creating what Kia calls the 'connected car Navigation Cockpit' (ccNC).

Power, Range, and Quick Charging

Underneath its sharp styling, the Kia EV4 is actually built on the company's advanced Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

This then provides you with a solid foundation for its all-electric powertrain, offering you a straightforward yet effective setup focused on efficiency and real-world usability for UK drivers.

Powertrain and Performance

For instance, unlike some rivals that offer a confusing array of power outputs, Kia has kept things simple for the EV4's UK launch.

Here, all models, from the entry-level 'Air' to the top-spec 'GT-Line S', are front-wheel drive and feature the same single electric motor.

This motor then gives you a very healthy 150kW, which is equivalent to 201bhp, and 283Nm of torque.

This then gives you a brisk and responsive acceleration perfect for city driving and confident motorway cruising alike.

For instant, the 0-62mph sprint is dealt with in a lively 7.5 seconds for the Standard Range model, and a near-identical 7.7 seconds for the slightly heavier Long Range versions as well.

Battery, Range, and Efficiency

Then, for buyers, you have a choice of two battery packs.

The 'Standard Range' model, available exclusively on the 'Air' trim, comes with a 58.3kWh battery.

This then provides you with an official WLTP range of up to 273 miles on a single charge, which is more than enough for the average weekly commute.

All other trims ('Air' Long Range, 'GT-Line', and 'GT-Line S') are fitted with the 'Long Range' 81.4kWh battery.

As this pack pushes the maximum potential range to an impressive 388 miles in the 'Air' model, making it one of the longest-range EVs in its class and easily capable of handling long-distance journeys across the country.

Charging

The EV4's 400V electrical architecture also allows for excellent charging performance as well.

For instance, when you need a quick top-up on the road, it can handle ultra-rapid DC charging speeds.

This is all while the Standard Range model can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes, while the larger Long Range battery takes a fraction longer at around 31 minutes.

For regular charging at home, all UK models come with an 11kW on-board AC charger, which means if you have a compatible three-phase wallbox installed, you can fully charge the 58.3kWh battery in around 5.5 hours and the 81.4kWh battery in just over 7 hours - making it easy to start every day with a full battery.

Warranty

One of Kia's biggest selling points across its entire range is its warranty, and the new EV4 is no exception here.

For example, owners will benefit from the company's renowned 7-year or 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty, whichever comes first.

This comprehensive "bumper-to-bumper" cover then protects you against manufacturing or material defects on the vast majority of the car's components, offering you long-term reassurance that is still a benchmark in the industry.

EV Component and Battery Cover

Crucially, for an electric vehicle, this excellent coverage extends to the high-tech powertrain.

Here, your key EV components, such as the electric motor, the gear drive unit, the power control unit, and the on-board charger, are all protected under the main 7-year / 100,000-mile policy.

Even better, Kia provides specific and enhanced cover for the most vital component, the high-voltage battery pack.

For example, the battery is covered by its own separate warranty for an impressive 8 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first registration.

This includes a capacity guarantee, meaning Kia will repair or replace the battery if its health drops below 70% of its original capacity during that period.

Overall, this comprehensive warranty is also fully transferable to subsequent owners, which can significantly improve your car's resale value down the line as well.

Pricing

Pricing here can vary, based on which model you go for.

For instance:

'Air' Trim

The range kicks off with the well-equipped 'Air' model, which starts at £34,695 for the Standard Range version with a 58.3kWh battery.

Then for those wanting the maximum possible range, the 'Air' with the larger 81.4kWh battery is available from £37,695.

'GT-Line' Trim

Stepping up to the sportier 'GT-Line' trim, which comes exclusively with the 81.4kWh long-range battery, prices begin at £39,395.

Here this model adds more aggressive styling, larger 19-inch wheels, and extra technology features as well.

'GT-Line S' Trim

At the top of the range is the 'GT-Line S', which includes premium features like a sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, and advanced driver aids.

It also uses the long-range battery and starts from £43,895, and it is worth noting this top-tier model crosses the £40,000 threshold, meaning it will be subject to the government's Expensive Car Supplement for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).
