Personal Contract Hire, also known as leasing, is an excellent way to finance your new car without the responsibilities of ownership. It allows you to drive a brand-new vehicle for an agreed period, typically ranging from 24 to 48 months, by paying fixed monthly rentals.

You can also choose for your Lease agreement to include maintenance, meaning servicing and some vehicle maintenance is included in the package, and not an additional cost.

How does Personal Contract Hire/Leasing work?

Just as you would if you were to buy a car on finance, you’ll make a series of regular monthly payments over the course of the agreement when you lease a car.

You'll also need to make an 'initial payment'. This will be equivalent to the first few months of monthly payments. Generally, the higher initial payment you can make, the lower your monthly payments will be.

Depending on your leasing agent, you may also be able to include car tax, vehicle maintenance and servicing within your agreement. Maintenance packages can be used to cover a wide range of usual maintenance items that a car may be expected to require during the term of your agreement. Check with your lease provider to find out what is included. Of course, a lease with a maintenance package is often slightly more expensive than one without.

At the end of your agreement, you will not own the vehicle and simply hand the car back to the lease company.

Advantages of leasing

  • Lower monthly payments/deposit
  • Upgrade opportunities
  • Minimal maintenance costs, especially if you choose a maintenance package
  • No long term commitment
  • No worries about depreciation

Disadvantages of leasing

  • You will never own the vehicle and there is no option to purchase
  • You will be limited on mileage and be charged for any miles covered over the agreed amount
  • You will be charged for any damage to the vehicle that is above normal wear and tear
  • Terms and conditions of a lease can sometimes be quite restrictive. Ensure you are fully aware of them all before signing the deal

Is Personal Contract Hire/Leasing right for me?

Leasing a vehicle could be right for you if you:

  • Like to change your car every 2-3 years for a new one
  • Don’t want to have to worry about depreciation
  • Want a lower monthly payment than you’d get with other types of finance
  • Want maintenance costs to be kept to a minimum.

What other finance options do I have?

If you don't think a PCP agreement is the right finance choice for you, there are other options available, including:

  • Hire Purchase (HP)
  • Personal Contract Hire (PCP)
  • Personal Loan
  • Cash

Chippenham Motor Company Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd's permissions as a Principal Firm allows Chippenham Motor Company Ltd and MRG to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.

Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.

All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
