Peugeot’s 508 Saloon is an unusual mix of affordability and luxury. The car’s sophisticated look and feel belies its low price tag, while the model also rewards you for buying it through low running costs. Add advanced technology to this and you have an extremely attractive model in a crowded class.
The 508 Saloon was the first in the new range to feature the firm’s iconic lion badge at the centre of its reshaped front grille. Feline halogen headlights reinforce the brand, and alongside LED daytime running lights create a striking light signature any hour of the day. Three-claw rear lights sit above a reshaped rear bumper which helps to give the car a more imposing stance on the road. On the GT Line-spec 508 a twin exhaust is seen at the very back, and this premium model also swaps the standard 17-inch alloys for 18-inch rims.
The 508 Saloon is popular among executive travellers for the comfort inside and the simple usability of its features. The dashboard controls and display are reached instantly from your position at the wheel. Behind it are large and clear instruments. Everyone can travel in comfort as cabin space is excellent, with multiple storage areas found across the interior. The boot carries up to 473 litres of luggage, which is plenty for most trips.
The display which dominates the dashboard is a seven-inch multifunction colour touchscreen that you use to follow directions given by the standard satellite navigation system. A DAB digital tuner is also included at no extra cost (excluding the 508 hybrid), as is a hands-free Bluetooth® function for taking calls and streaming music. GT Line equips the model with an additional colour head-up display that relays key details at the base of the windscreen, keeping your focus on the road. Peugeot Connected Apps, which enables you to access smartphone applications via the infotainment system, is one of the various optional extras.
Hybrid technology comes to the 508 for zero emissions output and superb fuel economy. The model couples a 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel engine with an electric motor for combined power of 161bhp and 300Nm of torque. Up to 70.6mpg combined can be reached, and the unit also releases 95g/km of CO2. The same 2.0-litre diesel engine but without an electric motor can be chosen, alongside a 1.6-litre alternative generating 118bhp and 300Nm of torque. Turbo charging helps the 179bhp diesel surge to 60mph from a standing start in approximately 8.5 seconds.
You and your passengers are well supported inside the 508 Saloon by its active safety technology, designed to reduce the chance of an accident. ABS retains your control of the car during an emergency stop, and accompanying Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBFD) plus Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) slow the model as quickly as possible. Other technologies include ESP, traction control, and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to counter a loss of grip, oversteer or understeer.
