Peugeot’s surprisingly affordable city car has been given a makeover for its latest generation to give you more style, uprated technology and miles of excitement on the urban streets. With a choice of highly-refined engines under the bonnet, the compact model is a rewarding purchase.
Buying the new 208 means first choosing between the practical five-door or the sportier three-door. They both gain the French firm’s signature front end which is defined by its deep and wide front grille beneath pointed headlamps. The rear lights are powerful LEDs, and have been shaped in a distinctive ‘lion claw’ form that is instantly recognisable. They wrap around the neatly-folded body which stays compact through short front and rear overhangs. Navigating the city is therefore effortless in the new 208.
On the inside the focus is on style and supreme craftsmanship. Every detail has been carefully considered as the dashes of chrome and luxurious upholstery prove. The steering wheel has been shrunk to give you a greater sense of control, while the simplistic instruments show trip and vehicle details in the clearest way. For added flexibility in the cabin, choose the Active or Allure models which offer a split folding rear bench.
None of the most important in-car features have been omitted by Peugeot, and as you climb the range you enjoy even more. As standard the 208 delivers a radio/CD player with auxiliary input and a USB port for connecting external devices. They can be operated safely and by touch alone via steering wheel-mounted controls. Integrated Bluetooth® is also a no-cost addition, and you can use it to receive phone calls when at the wheel or stream music from a compatible device. All but the opening Access A/C trim include a multifunction colour touchscreen with Mirror Screen, which links to your smartphone so you can interact with apps and other mobile functions.
For power you have a choice of BlueHDi diesel engines or the brand’s award-winning PureTech petrol. The diesels boast clean output and high returns, with the 74bhp 1.6-litre variant using a start/stop efficiency system to emit just 79g/km of CO2 (on the three-door).
For the five-door 208 Allure you can specify a 99bhp version of the diesel and feel a more responsive pull when accelerating. The PureTech petrols were recognised for their ability to blend power with economy, and include a 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre unit. When start/stop is included, the engine releases below 100g/km of CO2 to qualify for road tax exemption.
Safety is another major strength of the 208 as it arrives with a variety of active technologies and passive features to support them. Helping you to avoid accidents is an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) which detects the first sign of a skid and manages the car’s output to correct the situation. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) also helps you to stay on the intended path when braking heavily. If a collision does happen, the front, side and curtain airbags deploy to minimise any injuries.
