Peugeot has revived its legendary 208 GTi for the UK’s motorists to bring extra excitement to the most ordinary of journeys. Athletic looks are matched by energetic performance, with the car’s motorsport theme evident inside and out.
The French firm has made a series of carefully considered tweaks to the standard 208’s compact body for a finish that hints at the driving thrill that waits for you. The front face has become more contoured and muscular, with similarity sculpted panels stretching along each of the vehicle’s wings.
LED headlamps add sharpness to the front, while ‘lion claw’ rear lights separate the hatchback from others. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels sit over eye-catching red callipers, which alongside the GTi badging, spoiler and double chrome exhaust pipes set the motorsport theme.
More sporting additions can be admired inside. You slide into a supportive sports seat with embossed GTi branding and contrast red stitching. The left hand falls naturally onto the satin chrome and red gear knob, and in front is a flat-bottomed steering wheel also finished with a red thread. Aluminium pedals and door sills only enhance the car’s character. When at the wheel it is easy to keep track of driving details and trip information. The instrument cluster is cleverly positioned so your eyes aren’t far from it.
Style meets technology in the cabin where a multifunction colour touchscreen is found on the dashboard. With a few touches you can switch between the DAB digital radio and music stored on a device connected via USB or auxiliary input. A Mirror Screen function enables you to link your smartphone to the interface and enjoy various apps or other online services. Add the optional satellite navigation system for greater convenience and the likelihood is that you will never get lost again.
Proving that the 208 GTi doesn’t just look fast is its pulsating 205bhp THP petrol engine. The unit’s power coupled with a light kerb weight means the model can sprint all the way to 60mph from standing in around six seconds.
It carries on up through the gears with equally eager pace yet isn’t a thirsty engine. A start/stop efficiency system has been incorporated to reduce the amount of fuel that is consumed unnecessarily. This helps to lift fuel economy as high as 52.3mpg combined, which is helped by the hatchback’s aerodynamic shape.
Safety remained at the front of Peugeot’s mind when developing its new 208 GTi so that you and other buyers could get the most from it and remain protected. The manufacturer’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is standard fit but can be switched off so that the car’s movements aren’t managed as carefully. It is a feature that most who take the GTi to the track take advantage of, as it unleashes extra zest from the car. In everyday situations the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) will bring the GTi to a halt quickly and in a controlled way. For extra assurance on the road, there are multiple airbags to protect front and rear passengers plus two ISOFIX child seat mounts.
