Cambelt

If your cambelt fails or snaps, you could end up causing irreversible damage to your engine which could end up as a costly repair, or even worse, a complete write-off.

It’s not an element of the vehicle we usually think about, as it keeps itself tucked away in your engine bay working hard, but in reality, it is one of the most important parts of the engine.

Here’s everything you need to know about cambelts and how to look after them.

What is a cambelt?

A cambelt is also known as a timing belt, and it’s one of the most crucial elements of your car’s engine.

It is designed to keep the bottom half of the engine (pistons and crankcase) in sync with the top half (valves and cylinder head).

The cambelt will stretch over time, which can eventually lead to the part failing or snapping. If this happens, the internal components will no longer be working in sync, and instead will be causing serious damage.

This is why it is important to have your cambelt checked and replaced at regular intervals.

Is a timing chain the same as a cambelt?

A timing chain looks a little bit like a bicycle chain and performs the same role. Check your owner’s manual or speak to our team to check whether your car has a cambelt or a timing chain.

A timing chain is unlikely to stretch and snap, but can become slack if oil pressure falls low and tensioners fail. This will cause similar damage to a cambelt snapping.

How often does a cambelt need replacing?

The answer to this depends on your car. Most manufacturers recommend age or mileage intervals.

On average this tends to be every 4/5 years or every 40,000-60,000 miles depending on the vehicle. You will usually be able to find this information in your handbook, or you can speak to our team to find out the exact interval for your make and model.

Is cambelt covered under warranty?

A cambelt is not covered under most warranty policies as it is classed as a wear and tear item.

The only time the cambelt may be covered under your warranty is if it is found to have a manufacturer’s defect.

Is a cambelt part of an MOT?

A cambelt is not checked as part of a regular MOT. We recommend ensuring you book a separate check to ensure everything is in working order.

That being said, there is no way to determine when a cambelt was last changed by looking at it. If you do not have the relevant paperwork to tell you when the timing belt was last changed on your vehicle then the safest bet would always be to replace it.

How much does it cost to replace cambelt?

A timing belt replacement can cost anywhere up to £1,200 depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

This is not a simple job that can be completed at home, as any small error could result in irreversible engine damage. Please ensure a qualified mechanic completes your cambelt replacement.

Chippenham Motor Company Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd's permissions as a Principal Firm allows Chippenham Motor Company Ltd and MRG to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.

Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.

All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
