How to be more fuel efficient: 4 tips to make your tank of fuel last longer

Today's fuel prices can mean that filling up puts a huge dent in your wallet. But are you doing everything you can to make it last? Here at Chippenham Motor Company, we like you get the most out of your car, so here are some tips to be more fuel efficient and save a few pennies.

  1. Choose a fuel efficient car

This goes without saying, but some cars just perform more economically than others. If saving money on fuel is high on your list of priorities, then take this into account when looking for your next car. Hybrid cars such as the Kia Niro, Peugeot 3008 SUV and Ford Puma obviously will take the edge off the fuel bill with the boost from the battery power, but considering traditional cars you could also consider:

    - The Kia Ceed - up to 71mpg
    - The Peugeot 308 - up to 81mpg
    - The SEAT Arona - up to 59mpg
    - The Ford Focus - up to 81mpg

  2. Back off!

Your car uses the most fuel when it's accelerating, so to get more out of your fuel tank, you need to brake less, to avoid accelerating more. Leaving larger distances between you and the car in front is not only safer, but also will dramatically lower the amount you need to brake then accelerate. You could get up to 20% more out of your petrol just by doing this.

  3. Shift to neutrel

How can you be more fuel efficient if you drive an automatic? Simple. Shift to neutrel when you are stopped, whether that's at traffic lights, or in the drive-thru! This reduces strain on the transmission so will give you a few extra miles from your tank!

  4. Look after your tyres

Your tyres can affect how fuel efficient your car is. If your tyres are worn down, it forces your engine to work harder which means it will use more fuel. Air pressure can also take it's toll, so make sure you're tyres aren't under inflated. Things like poor wheel alignment will cause your tyres to wear faster, so maintaining your car is key to increasing fuel efficiency.

At Chippenham Motor Company, we believe that your car should enhance your life, so if you want to get your car in tip top shape, or switch to something that will save you money in the long run, we'd love to help. Click here to get in touch today.
