Motorists demand more from today’s MPVs. Ford knows this, and has designed its latest S-MAX people carrier to be an uncompromising piece of engineering excellence. The seven-seat model is undeniably functional yet also has an attractive form that is unmistakably Ford.
The MPV’s long and tall build has been carefully shaped for aerodynamics and instant appeal. The roofline rises high from the windscreen and falls away to a rear spoiler.
Down at the front there are halogen daytime running lights among the piercing headlights, in addition to a chrome-finished grille. Front fog lights make sure the S-MAX is seen in misty conditions, and like the 17-inch alloy wheels are a standard fixture. Gain the most appealing exterior finish by selecting from one of nine paint options.
Unsurprisingly, the people carrier contains a spacious cabin within its attractive body. Where the model differs is its smart seating system that offers ultimate flexibility. Folding second and third rows allow you to adapt the arrangement for the stowage needs of each journey. It only takes the press of a button to tumble the seats forward and store longer items. Where fitted, a panoramic glass roof allows you to enjoy the outside from within the car. The powered sunblind retracts backwards quickly and returns to its position just as efficiently for privacy.
The cabin is a connected place to travel in as a variety of Ford technology has been fitted. The entry-level Zetec entertains and informs you with a DAB digital radio and USB, auxiliary and SD-card input. They enable you to link personal music players to the system and control them via an eight-inch TFT touchscreen. Ford SYNC 2 is the standard infotainment technology which combines audio playback with satellite navigation (where fitted), climate control and compatible smartphone functions. The Zetec’s 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster grows to 10.1 inches in Titanium and Titanium Sport versions to show even more information.
A range of engine options deliver power in addition to efficiency, rather than one or the other. The manufacturer’s 158bhp 1.5-litre and 237bhp 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines both surge to 60mph from stationary in less than ten seconds. With auto start/stop they also consume less fuel than before and release fewer CO2 emissions. The diesel option is a 2.0-litre Duratorq ranging from 118bhp to 207bhp. They too benefit from auto start/stop for a boost to economy, and when a manual gearbox is attached the unit can return up to 56.5mpg combined. Select versions feature all-wheel drive which transfers power to the wheels with the most grip for more secure performance.
This smart MPV knows how to keep you and your passengers safe as it features multiple active technologies and robust passive fixtures. The former includes Roll Stability Control which uses sensors to monitor output before subtle corrections are made to stabilise the vehicle. Curve Control comes into play when cornering at speed by reducing torque or braking the MPV if you enter a bend too quickly. Ford’s standard stability and traction systems are included across the range for protection in most situations, as are airbags for the front, side, curtain and driver’s knee. ISOFIX child seat mountings are another no-cost addition that hold infants securely.
