As handsome, refined and spacious as ever, Kia’s fourth-generation Optima saloon has what it takes to challenge its competitors in the segment. Lighter than its predecessor, yet more powerful and with revamped driving dynamics, this is an ideal mid-sized passenger car for both private and company car drivers. Standard features are also generous, and include dual-zone air conditioning, a rear reversing camera and a 7” touchscreen with satellite navigation.

The Optima is slightly longer, taller and wider than its predecessor, as well as having a longer wheelbase. The underlying frame of the vehicle is made from high-tensile steel that improves handling and steering precision, whilst weight has been reduced by 65kg – largely due to the use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic elements.
With its characteristically Kia “tiger nose” grille, long bonnet and sharp character lines, the Optima is attractive and imposing on the road. 16”, 17” or 18” alloy wheels round off its impressive looks – the range-topping “4” trim level includes bi-xenon headlights for better illumination and an even more impressive appearance.
Kia’s engineers have worked diligently to reduce Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels in the new Optima. The result is a cabin that is quiet and serene – as well as one that is notably comfortable, with adjustable seats in the front and rear (“4” specification heightens the luxury with heated and ventilated leather seats). Headroom, shoulder room and rear-seat legroom have all increased, thanks to the longer wheelbase, and loadspace has been increased to 510 litres.
Only one engine is available with the new Optima – but its 1.7 litre CRDi diesel has enough all-round capabilities to satisfy any driver. With 139bhp and maximum torque of 340Nm between 1750-2500rpm, this unit delivers an accomplished performance, whether linked to the six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
As well as its strong structure and multiple airbags, the Optima has a variety of active safety systems to forestall any loss of control – regardless of the quality of road surface or the weather conditions. The Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management systems work to detect a potential skid or loss of control, and direct power to the wheels in a way that helps to avert the danger.
